when do i stop for a school bus?
If a school vehicle has stopped on the road and has the flashing red lights on, all vehicles on the road must stop at least 20 feet away from the school vehicle.
On a divided highway, vehicles behind the bus must stop, but vehicles traveling in the opposite direction may proceed with caution.
Introducing Video Enforcement
In order to keep the streets safer for children, Carroll County Public Schools has installed cameras to the side of school buses to capture vehicles who illegally drive by them while the red lights are flashing and children are boarding or stepping off the bus. When the stop sign on the bus is out, the cameras detect if a vehicle has illegally passed the school bus.
Violating the Ordinance
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and Carroll County Public Schools hope to further educate and hold violators accountable when passing a school bus that is loading children. Stop arm cameras have been installed on every bus operating in the county and record drivers who pass activated school bus stop signs. When a citation is issued, a high-resolution picture of the violator’s license plate will be recorded. Keeping our children safe is our number one goal.
