Minimum requirements

All Applicants

    • Must possess a high school diploma or GED recognized by the State Board of Education
    • Must be able to read, write, and speak English
    • Must possess a valid driver's license

Correctional Deputy Sheriff and Civilian Applicants, including Court Security

  • Must be a United States citizen or a resident alien
  • Must be at least 18 years of age for Correctional Deputy Sheriff and Civilian positions
  • Must be 21 years of age for Court Security
  • Must be eligible to possess and use a handgun for Correctional Deputy and Court Security

Law Enforcement Deputy Sheriff

    • Must be a United States citizen
    • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of certification
    • Must be eligible to possess and use a handgun

Drugs

For Law Enforcement Deputy Sheriff
Recruit/Lateral Applicants

  • Used any marijuana (including vapes, dabs/wax, THC oil, edibles, and other natural products of the cannabis plant) within 3 years of application to CCSO, whether used legally or illegally
  • Used marijuana more than 20 times within the past 5 years
  • Used any synthetic marijuana (lab made or chemically laced “fake marijuana”, such as K2 or Spice) within 3 years of application to CCSO
  • Any illicit use of prescription medicines or inhalants within 3 years of application to CCSO
  • Any illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), such as psychedelic mushrooms, cocaine, methamphetamine, anabolic steroids, or other CDS; or a narcotic drug, for any illegal purpose within 3 years of application to CCSO
  • Used a controlled dangerous substance (CDS) or narcotic drug, or any combination of controlled dangerous substances or narcotic drugs, a total of 5 or more times in your lifetime, OR one (1) time since becoming 21 years old
  • Ever used Fentanyl (not prescribed by a doctor), Heroin, PCP, or LSD
  • Ever illegally used a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), narcotic drug, or marijuana while employed to enforce Federal, State, or local law by any government entity
  • Ever illegally used, ingested, possessed, sold, produced, cultivated, distributed, or transported a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), narcotic drug, or marijuana on or after the date of initial certification as a law enforcement officer in Maryland
  • Ever illegally sold, produced, cultivated, distributed or transported a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), narcotic drug, or marijuana
  • Been convicted or otherwise found guilty of selling, manufacturing, or distributing a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), narcotic drug, or marijuana

For Correctional Deputy Recruit/Lateral Applicants,
Court Security and Civilian Applicants

  • Used any marijuana (including vapes, dabs/wax, THC oil, edibles, and other natural products of the cannabis plant) within 1 year of application to CCSO, whether used legally or illegally
  • Any use of synthetic marijuana (lab made or chemically laced “fake marijuana”, such as K2 or Spice) within 3 years of application to CCSO
  • Any illicit use of prescription medicines or inhalants within 3 years of application to CCSO
  • Any illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), such as psychedelic mushrooms, cocaine, methamphetamine, anabolic steroids, or other CDS; or a narcotic drug, for any illegal purpose within 3 years of application to CCSO
  • Ever used Fentanyl (not prescribed by a doctor), Heroin, PCP, or LSD

  • Illegally sold, produced, cultivated, or distributed marijuana within 3 years of application to CCSO
  • Ever illegally sold, produced, cultivated, or distributed a controlled dangerous substance (CDS) or narcotic drug
  • Have ever been found guilty or convicted of a misdemeanor or felony for the purchase sale, manufacture, or distribution of a controlled dangerous substance, narcotics, or marijuana
Driving Record
  • Currently have 5 or more points on your driver's license (ONLY applies to applicants for Law Enforcement Deputy Sheriff, Corrections, and civilian positions requiring the operation of county owned vehicles)
  • Been convicted of or received Probation Before Judgment (PBJ) for any Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) charge(s) on two (2) or more occasions; or, you have been convicted or received Probation Before Judgment (PBJ) for DWI/DUI within the past five (5) years (ONLY applies to applicants for Law Enforcement Deputy Sheriff, Corrections, and civilian positions requiring the operation of county owned vehicles)
  • A driver's license that has been suspended, canceled, or revoked within 3 years of application. (ONLY applies to applicants for Law Enforcement Deputy Sheriff, Corrections, and civilian positions requiring the operation of county owned vehicles)
Gang Ever been a member of a criminal gang or security threat group.
Military Discharge Been discharged from the military with a "Dishonorable" discharge.
Other Been convicted of Perjury, in any state.


Hiring & Selection Process

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Hiring and Selection Process is comprised of several phases and is divided into two stages:


The First Stage is the Pre-Offer Stage and is comprised of several phases, which are completed prior to being presented with a conditional offer of employment.


The Second Stage is comprised of several additional phases, which are to be completed after being presented with a conditional offer of employment.


Applicants will be notified by email as they advance through the hiring process. Prior to all final job offers, the Sheriff will review all qualified applicant information and determine which applicant(s) will be chosen to receive a final offer of employment.
